Conventions of a music video

Everything depends on genre
Camera work
- Generally close ups of instruments and showing that the band can play them well it gives a sense of realism, close up and personal with the video.
- Tracking shots make it more exciting.
- Panning is used a lot.
- Low angle shots get used.
- All band members are used in the video at some point.
Editing
- Straight cuts.
- Pace - to keep audiences interested.
- Transitions - being adventurous and new.
- Make the audience want to make it watch more than once.
Mise-en-scene
- Performance and the story itself.
- Props - instruments mainly but some are used in the story part.
- Costumes - important but it depends on the genre.
- Actors/band - are important to tell the story.
- Location - the location is very important as it sets the image of the video even though there can be more than one location.
- Lighting - the lighting is very important as it can be used to highlight something important within the video or to help light a room or a person like a spotlight.
Narrative
- A sub-story that illustrates the lyrics.
- Showing the instruments, vocals and the band.
